1 Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said, ☆ Et Éliphaz, le Thémanite, répondit et dit : And Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said, Respondió Elifaz temanita, y dijo:
2 Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind? Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind, ¿Proferirá el sabio vana sabiduría,
Y llenará su vientre de viento solano?
3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good? Reasoning with unprofitable talk, and with speeches which do no good? ¿Disputará con palabras inútiles,
Y con razones sin provecho?
4 Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God. Yea, thou makest piety of none effect, and restrainest meditation before *God. Tú también disipas el temor,
Y menoscabas la oración delante de Dios.
5 For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty. For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou hast chosen the tongue of the crafty.
6 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee. Ta bouche te condamnera, et non pas moi, et tes lèvres déposent contre toi. Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I; and thy lips testify against thee. Tu boca te condenará, y no yo;
Y tus labios testificarán contra ti.
7 Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills? Art thou the first man that was born? and wast thou brought forth before the hills? ¿Naciste tú primero que Adán?
¿O fuiste formado antes que los collados?
8 Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself? Hast thou listened in the secret council of +God? And hast thou absorbed wisdom for thyself? ¿Oíste tú el secreto de Dios,
Y está limitada a ti la sabiduría?
9 What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us? What knowest thou that we know not? what understandest thou which is not in us?
10 With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father. Both the greyheaded and the aged are with us, older than thy father.
11 Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee? Are the consolations of *God too small for thee? and the word gently spoken to thee?
12 Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at, Comment ton cœur t'emporte-t-il, et comment tes yeux clignent-ils, Why doth thy heart carry thee away? and why do thine eyes wink? ¿Por qué tu corazón te aleja,
Y por qué guiñan tus ojos,
13 That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth? That thou turnest thy spirit against *God, and lettest words go out of thy mouth? Para que contra Dios vuelvas tu espíritu,
Y saques tales palabras de tu boca?
14 What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous? What is man, that he should be pure? and he that is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
15 Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight. Voici, il ne se fie pas à ses saints, et les cieux ne sont pas purs à ses yeux : Behold, he putteth no trust in his holy ones, and the heavens are not pure in his sight: He aquí, en sus santos no confía,
Y ni aun los cielos son limpios delante de sus ojos;
16 How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water? How much less the abominable and corrupt, --man, that drinketh unrighteousness like water! ¿Cuánto menos el hombre abominable y vil,
Que bebe la iniquidad como agua?
17 I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare; ✱ Je t'enseignerai, écoute-moi ; et ce que j'ai vu je te le raconterai, I will shew thee, listen to me; and what I have seen I will declare; Escúchame; yo te mostraré,
Y te contaré lo que he visto;
18 Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it: Ce que les sages ont déclaré d'après leurs pères et n'ont pas caché ; — Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hidden; Lo que los sabios nos contaron
De sus padres, y no lo encubrieron;
19 Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them. À eux seuls la terre fut donnée, et aucun étranger ne passa au milieu d'eux : — Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.
20 The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor. Tous ses jours, le méchant est tourmenté, et peu d'années sont réservées à l'homme violent ; All his days the wicked man is tormented, and numbered years are allotted to the violent.
21 A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him. La voix des choses effrayantes est dans ses oreilles ; au milieu de la prospérité, le dévastateur arrive sur lui ; The sound of terrors is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer cometh upon him. Estruendos espantosos hay en sus oídos;
22 He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword. Il ne croit pas revenir des ténèbres, et l'épée l'attend ; He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is singled out for the sword.
23 He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand. Il sait qu'à son côté un jour de ténèbres est préparé ; He wandereth abroad for bread, --where may it be? He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
24 Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle. Distress and anguish make him afraid; they prevail against him, as a king ready for the battle.
25 For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty. Car il a étendu sa main contre ∗Dieu, et il s'élève contre le Tout-puissant ; For he hath stretched out his hand against *God, and strengthened himself against the Almighty: Por cuanto él extendió su mano contra Dios,
26 He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers: Il court contre lui, le cou [tendu], sous les bosses épaisses de ses boucliers. He runneth against him, with outstretched neck, with the thick bosses of his bucklers; Corrió contra él con cuello erguido,
Con la espesa barrera de sus escudos.
27 Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks. For he hath covered his face with his fatness, and gathered fat upon his flanks. Porque la gordura cubrió su rostro,
E hizo pliegues sobre sus ijares;
28 And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps. And he dwelleth in desolate cities, in houses that no man inhabiteth, which are destined to become heaps. Y habitó las ciudades asoladas,
Las casas inhabitadas,
Que estaban en ruinas.
29 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth. He shall not become rich, neither shall his substance continue, and their possessions shall not extend upon the earth. No prosperará, ni durarán sus riquezas,
Ni extenderá por la tierra su hermosura.
30 He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away. Il ne sortira pas des ténèbres ; la flamme séchera ses rejetons, et il s'en ira par le souffle de sa bouched. He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches; and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away. No escapará de las tinieblas;
31 Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence. Qu'il ne compte pas sur la vanité : il sera déçu, car la vanité sera sa récompense ; Let him not trust in vanity: he is deceived, for vanity shall be his recompense; No confíe el iluso en la vanidad,
Porque ella será su recompensa.
32 It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green. It shall be complete before his day, and his branch shall not be green. Él será cortado antes de su tiempo,
Y sus renuevos no reverdecerán.
33 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive. He shall shake off his unripe grapes as a vine, and shall cast his flower as an olive. Perderá su agraz como la vid,
Y derramará su flor como el olivo.
34 For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery. For the family of the ungodly shall be barren, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.
35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit. They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity, and their belly prepareth deceit. Concibieron dolor, dieron a luz iniquidad,
Y en sus entrañas traman engaño.
